1¼ cup Whole Milk
¼ lb (1 stick) Butter
2 extra large Eggs
½ to 1 cup Sugar (I made it on my 2nd try with about a cup.) I like it sweeter.
1 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
¼ oz Active Dry Yeast, (1 envelope packet)
4 cups All Purpose Unbleached Flour, sifted
1 Egg with 1 Tbsp Water as egg wash (I added about 2 tsp sugar to this egg wash.)
Colored Sprinkles
2 Hard Boiled Eggs, colored
Makes Two Breads (I actually made 1 large and 2 small loaves)
Step One:
Add butter to milk in saucepan and just warm until butter melts. (Not Hot)
Using hand mixer or stand mixer, combine eggs, sugar and vanilla.
Add the warm milk and melt butter a little at a time until blended.
Mix in dry yeast until incorporated.
Mixing thoroughly, add flour a little at a time. (I used a 1/2 cup scoop.)
Scrape dough from beaters and turn out onto lightly floured bread board. If dough feels sticky, add more flour until you can turn it and roll it onto board.
Work the dough with floured hands. It should feel pillowy soft and doesn't need much kneading, just enough to handle well. (not sticky)
Place into a large (slightly floured) bowl, cover with plastic wrap and place a folded table cloth or bath towel on top.
Set bowl in a warm/room temperature spot (70-80º) for at least one hour to rise. (Will be about double in size.)
Step Two:
Turn out risen dough onto lightly floured bread board, and with hands, form into an oblong loaf about the size of a bakery french bread.
Cut this loaf into 4 equal parts (or in half, using other half to cut into 2 parts)
Roll these parts into balls of dough and then roll each ball into a long, narrow loaf. (similar to a long bread stick)
Using two loaves, take one end of each loaf and seal it to the other. Wrap the two loaves forming a braid and curl the braid into a circle.
Seal the open ends together, and place each of these circles onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
Cover your circles with plastic wrap and let rise again in a warm spot for another 45 minutes.
Step Three:
Heat oven to 350º
Remove plastic from loaves and brush each with egg wash.
If desired, sprinkle each with some pretty little sprinkles and add a colored hard boiled egg to the center.
Place cookie sheet(s) in center rack of oven and bake for 25 minutes.
Let cool before slicing.
